Round Silos

Round Silos

Round Silos are typically round for the same reason that many other storage vessels are round: cylinder stress, also known as hoop stress, is the most efficient way to withstand the force from the uniform pressure being applied to the inside of the container. Most grains and other similar materials stored in silos can behave with similar properties to a fluid, such as applying pressure to the containing walls that increase with depth.

Another advantage of round silos is that there are not any sharp corners to trap material, making it easier to perform a thorough cleaning. However, not all silos are round. If the materials available are strong enough to withstand those forces in a polygonal or even rectangular shape, those can be built as well; this is quite common in shorter silos. For example, rectangular silos can take advantage of shared/common walls between multiple chambers, which reduces material costs in construction.

It is good to mention that most grains and other materials stored in silos can behave with similar properties to a fluid. This means that these grains can apply pressure to the containing walls that increase with depth. Another advantage of the round shape of silos is that there are no sharp corners that could trap material which makes it easier for the farmers to perform a thorough cleaning.

There is a reason why silos are typically round the same as other storage vessels and it is because of the cylinder stress, also known as hoop stress. The cylinder stress is the most efficient way to withstand the force from the uniform pressure being applied to the inside of the container.

  • MEET THE NEEDS OF DIVERSE INDUSTRIES
  • The overwhelming majority of the “industrial-focused” silos today are going to be manufactured out of mild steel for a variety of different reasons. For starters, this construction material is incredibly robust and relatively easy to work with, making it an ideal solution for the mass production of these kinds of installations.
  • On top of that, the material itself – and the finished product – is tremendously durable and very corrosion-resistant (on the inside as well as the exterior). This means it is going to enjoy a very long functional life with very little maintenance or repairs necessary along the way.
  • Mild steel is an Ideal solution for those involved in the chemical industry, the ceramic industry, and the paper industry. Also, for those looking to leverage silos in the power and energy world, water and sewage community, and the oil and mining industries, mild steel meets most every demand.
  • Silo elements and struts constructed of sendzimir-galvanized steel
  • Cylinder heights up to 25 m
  • Hopper silo diameters up to 32 m
  • Substructure supports, and ascents depending on requirements
  • Outdoor installation
